Age Gap

I knew I wanted to have 2 children but I also knew that I wouldn’t be a good mom to kids close together in age. I am 36 and I have a 91/2 year old son and a 5 year old daughter. I had 2 terrible pregnancies consisting of throwing up every day, heartburn up to my ear drums, dehydration, and hospitalization. The list goes on. So, I wasn’t in any great hurry to put myself through that again. After my son was born, I was fine with waiting 41/2 years for my second child. Thank god it was a girl. I never had to do it again. And yes, my second pregnancy was identical to the first.

Having my kids farther apart allowed me to spend great quality time with each of them. When my daughter was born my son was in his third year of pre-school. He was old enough to understand the presence of his new sister and never felt threatened by her arrival. In fact, when his grandmother picked him up from school shortly after we came home from the hospital, he said, “Grandma, we have to get home! Lola needs me!” When I heard that I new we made the right decision to wait.

Now that they are older, life is hectic with ballet, gymnastics, guitar, football, hockey, ski team, making dinner, doing laundry, walking the dog, bringing espresso Oreo milkshakes to my husband at work, working myself, and finally sitting down to watch an episode of Desperate Housewives.

Life is good. I wouldn’t have changed a thing.
